Brooklyn Bodega preps for Dilla Lives Tribute and Fundraiser
October 19, 2006
Brooklyn, NY – On November 1st at the
Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, The
Brooklyn Bodega will be paying homage to James
Yancey aka J Dilla. Since the passing of Dilla in
February of 2006 there have been numerous tributes
paid to the producer from Miami to LA to Toronto.
There is no doubt that Dilla and his music was loved
by fans and peers alike. The creative team at
Brooklyn Bodega has decided to take a different spin
on the tribute party on November 1st.
Bodega Creative Director James Blagden and PAIRS
column writer Jake Perry have collected 95% of J
Dilla’s known discography and will have it available for
the November fundraiser/tribute. The music will be
by request only as archivists James and Jake will also
serve as DJ’s for the night. “This party is for Dilla
lovers by Dilla lovers so we thought it was important
we let the people control the night. We are very
proud of the selections we will have at the Brewery.
People are going to bug out when they see all the
early Dilla stuff we have, plus the work he did with Q-
Tip and the Ummah that is largely uncredited,” writes
Jake.
In addition the Bodega will be creating an annotated
discography that will highlight Dilla tracks that were
instrumental in the evolution of his sound and
legacy. Creative Director James Blagden, “We tried
very hard to pick tracks that we felt were important.
Not necessarily our favorites, but tracks that help
tell the story. This is a task we took very seriously.
Dilla meant too much to too many people, we had to
come correct. And we feel we did.”
“Dilla Lives” will feature a free open bar donated by
hosts The Brooklyn Brewery. Limited edition Dilla
Lives T-Shirts will be for sale with all profits going to
the J Dilla Foundation. For more info visit www.jdilla.org.
