Common is well known for having penned one of the most iconic odes to Hip Hop with “I Used to Love H.E.R.” It seems he’s found that love again as he brings together Daniel Ceasar and Dwele to express that emotion on “HER Love”. He highlights the importance of Hip Hop and many people’s lives and how it’s been open to all with lines like “gangstas, Gods, you’d hug and kiss ’em”. Com Sense seems to embrace all regional varieties of Hip Hop on this iteration. He name checks some of the modern artists in the game like Kendrick Lamar, Jaden Smith, Meek Mills, and surprisingly Lil Uzi. He seems to even acknowledge styles he’s previously seemingly been against with the line “they trip when you mumble, they trip when you sing/but you gave us a chance to dream”. That line seems a bit at odds with the line from “Chi City” off of Be where he says “I wonder if these whack niggas realize they whack/And they the reason that my people say they tired of rap”. I suppose mumble rap wasn’t a thing yet but it is often put in the wack category. Common brings a nice soulful vibe that seeks to reach out to and embrace the whole of Hip Hop pay respect to it all.
