The video for Common’s self-described “rallying cry and call to action” “Black America Again” is several minutes shorter than the full version of the song but no less powerful. The video of the shooting death of Alton Sterling opens the music video and cuts away before bringing in the piano that leads into the song. The video shows tight shots of Common and Black men and women emotionally dealing with the realities of being Black in America…again. Stevie Wonder’s role is shorter as he rounds out the brief outro leaving the listener wanting more of his distinctive vocals. It also makes you wonder why Stevie and Common haven’t done more together or why Hip Hop artists in general haven’t solicited the Stevie more through the genre’s life.
As this is the title track off of Common’s “Black America Again” album, it looks like we are in for a treat.
