Fly Gypsy Visits Bob Marley’s Jamaican Home For Debut Video From Change For A Dollar EP
Fly Gypsy has been garnering excellent feedback with the recent release of their second single “You,” and to celebrate the release date of their new EP Change For A Dollar, and reward fans for all of their dedication and support, the duo has decided to release an accompanying video for the song. To shoot the video, the group has enlisted the talents of famed Jamaican video director Ras Kassa whose impressive resume includes the likes of Sean Paul, Willie Nelson, Damian, Stephen Marley, and Beenie Man, to name a few. The video will premiere on MTVu and VH1 Soul in the coming weeks.
After taking a stylistic departure from their past material with “You,” Fly Gypsy tried to visually capture that new direction in the video. What was supposed to be a daylong shoot turned into a three-day adventure through Jamaica. The video follows the group from their arrival on boat, to a country bus ride complete with a live chicken, to a beach full of beautiful women, until finally winding down with a grown and sexy house party filmed in Bob Marley’s house. When asked about shooting a video in his native country, emcee Kowboy Kom said “Shooting was fun, and to be shooting a video in Oracabessa, which has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, was surreal. I will never forget that beach and that experience – it was very humbling and inspiring.” Echoing Kom’s sentiments, producersongwriter Alexei Jendayi also had this to add about filming in Bob Marley’s house, “Shooting at Bob Marley’s house was a spiritual experience. I was behind turntables that looked like they had been untouched since when he lived there. We shot the party scenes there long past midnight, and as the extras were beginning to look a little tired, Kom and I had to hype folks like a real show.”
The much talked-about hip-hop duo Fly Gypsy made its first splash in late 2008 with an election-themed single that introduced the duo’s energetic, guitar-driven sound to music fans around the world. The group formally launched in July 2009 and, since the launch, has released a successful and critically acclaimed mixtape, shot a video in Jamaica with famed director Ras Kassa (acclaimed for his work with Sean Paul, Beenie Man, and Damian Marley), and was featured on over 200 websites and blogs, including the influential HipHopDX, Okayplayer, 2dopeboyz, and DJBooth. Their single “2 Step” has been steadily climbing college radio charts and their freestyle on DJBooth is currently number 1 of 112 others. Music critics have praised the Washington, D.C.-based duo for their ability to attract commercial appeal without compromising their musicianship or message, comparing the duo to the Fugees, Jay-Z, and Kanye West. The group’s latest release, Change for a Dollar, is available now in all digital outlets and on Amazon, and the Vodka and Rum Mixtape is available now for free download on the group’s website, flygypsy.com.
