Freekey Zekey and Asylum Partner For New Album

Dipset South To Be Established Spring '07

 

New York, NY —  Less than two weeks after his November 20, 2006 return to New York, Diplomat Records President Freekey Zekey sat down with Asylum Executives Todd Moscowitz and Joie “Joey I.E.” Manda and Diplomat CEO Cam'ron to negotiate a multi-million dollar deal for his solo debut album, Book Of Ezekiel. The project is currently being prepared for release in Spring 2007 on Diplomat Records/Asylum.

 

While Freekey Zekey gained early fame for his hilarious skits on Dipset Mixtapes and Cam'ron's albums, Zeke attained much of his public notoriety due to his legal woes. After being victimized in a robbery attempt in 2004, old charges arose, and he was sentenced to serve time in North Carolina. During his incarceration, Zeke began building a business foundation for his solo music career with the assistance of his manager, Rick Dalton, and the support of his Dipset family. With the Diplomat Records/Asylum relationship already in place, the album partnership was a natural progression to the next phase of his career.

 

“At the end of the day it's about getting that cake,” Freekey Zekey said of the negotiation. “You've got to capitalize on the right time – everything is timing. We were all sitting in the studio, and Cam was discussing what was going on with his deal, and they cut him off like, 'What's popping with Zeke? Let's get it rockin!” They were happy, and of course a smart person, a hustler like Todd and Joey I.E., they knew – 'We might as well get him now before someone else gets him.'”

 

Freekey Zekey will officially launch his own label, Dipset South, after the release of his album in Spring 2007. Despite the regional flavor of the name, Zeke asserts that the brand is global. “When you say Dipset South, it's only because it's based there. We don't limit it to being in the South with Southern artists. Anything could happen – we could have country music or R&B or elevator music. It's worldwide as far as a record label.” Despite rumors, there are currently no acts signed to the new imprint.

 

Going into the new year, Zeke will be releasing a mixtape as a prelude to his full length debut. Even with the phenomenal success of his camp, Freekey Zekey's personal aspirations are succinct. “I want success, and respect of the fact that I'm in business. I'm a real dude.”

Building off of his dynamic self expression, Zeke began putting his creative energies into the music as Dipset’s star began to rise. Unfortunately, his ambitions were slowed after he was victimized in a robbery attempt in 2004. The situation brought up old charges, and Zeke was sentenced to 35 to 42 months in North Carolina.

 

During his incarceration, Freekey utilized his resources and laid out a plan for his music career. He put together a solid team, garnered press and planned his own coming home parties between North Carolina and New York. He was released on November 20, 2006, and in less than two weeks sealed his solo album deal with Asylum Records.

 

Despite the setbacks in his personal life, Zeke stayed in touch with the Diplomats’ business effectively, rallying for the success of each new project. He is stepping into the mix with vigor, both mentally and spiritually prepared to take the reigns. “The only difference now is that we have a lot more money,” he says. “It was like I was free, I just couldn't move around. I stayed in tune so much with the label that it was like I was there. Nothing really changed except the year of the Range.”
