Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot is making a buzz with the first single titled “Throw It Back” off of her latest album Iconology; her first since 2005’s The Cookbook. Missy Elliot’s music videos always contained some creative and lighthearted fun; even as far back as her first outing “Supa Dupa Fly”. On “Throw It Back” we get more of what you’d expect visually from Missy. The video starts out with a skit that seems to be aimed at those who have come of age since she last came around who might not know who she is. The double dutch braids later in the video and the literal wig snatching is all part of Elliot’s signature humor and wit. Lines like “I did records for tweet before y’all could even tweet” have caught listeners attention. However, in comparison to what we’ve previously heard from Missy, this record seems a bit low energy. That said, it’s nice to see choreography back in music videos. One thing’s for sure, we will be watching Missy and the youngins will be too.
