Redman is known for his creative and often humorous lyrical prowess. On his new single “Black Man In America”, Redman continues to give what you expect from the Jersey emcee. He touches on succeeding against the odds as a black man in America; hence the title. However, for me, it’s the third verse that really stands out and gives you something you might not normally expect to get from Reggie Noble. Here he takes a bit more of a serious and direct tone. He recounts some moments in his past like drug dealing but points out that he has no stories to tell. He recognizes the importance of an education and at the same time urges people to learn a trade. He is in mentor mode here indirectly telling artists to not just be an artist but learn the business because that’s how he’s been able to have the longevity that he has. Apparently, Red still has other facets of himself to display. This begs the question. Will there be more of this in the future?
