MC, producer, DJ, Interdependent Media owner, and all around hip-hop renaissance man TRUTHLiVE is back with “Broken,” the third leak from his soon-to-be released pre-album EP, The UnLearning. While the previous two releases from the EP found TRUTHLiVE targeting lackluster MCs with potent rhymes, “Broken” instead serves as the definitive expression of TRUTHLiVE’s contempt and disgust with all things wrong with the world today. Weaving his rhymes of protest against, what he refers to as, “the apathy and complacency of society in general,” TRUTHLiVE poignantly expresses the theme throughout the song’s lyrically twisting bars. Set against a hard-hitting beat courtesy of The ARE (De La Soul, Masta Ace, EMC), TRUTHLiVE raps, “Fiending for the meaning while we seeded from the semen of demons that are breathing in heathen’s paradise/ I’m seething ’cause I’m seeing a brand new kind of reason for the treason they have committed in the name of the Christ.” “The message of the song is to care,” exclaims TRUTHLiVE. “Pay attention to what’s going on and take control of your part in the whole. Things may be ‘Broken’ now, but they can certainly be fixed. Individual accountability and responsibility is what leads to change.”

As the owner and founder of Bay Area record label Interdependent Media, TRUTHLiVE has helped promote the careers of artists such as Tanya Morgan, Finale, J*DaVeY, and more. His full-length debut album, Patience, produced entirely by Jake One, will be available April 20, 2010 via Interdependent Media.

The Background:

Evan “TRUTHLiVE” Phillips, owner and founder of Interdependent Media, has certainly made his mark in the music industry with his wide range of talents. As an emcee, DJ, entrepreneur, and artist, TRUTHLiVE has had his hands in everything from a very young age. After a traumatic adolescent period where his health was at risk, three heart surgeries proved the artist to be quite a fighter. He explains to his new listeners, “The name TRUTHLiVE doesn’t mean that I’m proclaiming myself as the truth, end-all be-all; it’s more of a reminder to myself on how to conduct my life and career.” The MC best summates, “My music is my truth and my life.” That meaningful music will arrive on April 20th in the form of Patience, TRUTHLiVE’s debut release, courtesy of Bay Area label Interdependent Media.
